H1N1 Flu Awareness

2009-08-18

The following information is intended to provide members of the Wild Association with guidelines to prevent the spread of the H1N1 Flu Virus or Swine Flu during the upcoming hockey season.

Like all infections and viruses it can be spread in two ways:

1. Directly from an infected person to another by coughing, sneezing or talking to another person

2. Indirectly where an infected person infects a surface such as a door handle, tablesor water bottle and a second person touches the infected area.

Control and Prevention

The following control measures and best practices will help to reduce the spread of this and all other types of virus or diseases at home, at the rink and other public places.

1. Hand Washing: The most effective practice for reducing virus transmission is frequent and thorough hand washing, either with soap and water or hand-sanitizing solution. Consider putting a bottle of hand sanitizer in your child's equipment bag to use before and after games or practices.

2. When Coughing or Sneezing: Cover your mouth with a tissue or with your arm.

3. Social Distancing:  Maintain a distance of 3 to 4 feet from others when socializing particularly with a person displaying symptoms of a respiratory illness.

4. Personal Water Bottles: Consider the use of a personal water bottle for games and practices to avoid indirect spread from others.

5. If you are sick: Stay at home and follow instructions of your family physician or public health officials.
