There are many options available for elite hockey players to pursue higher education opportunities thanks to their hockey abilities. Canadian and American University scholarships and bursaries are available and the paths open to young student-athletes are many as well.

The following sources of information are provided to help athletes and their families learn more about these opportunities.

The OEMHL website is a great starting point to learn about educational opportunities. Their Education page provides information on various post-secondary opportunities and information on the AAA Bursary Fund. There is also a downloadable Guide For College-Bound Athletes. Canadian Hockey League Scholarship program

Best of Both Worlds
In Ontario, The CHL Scholarship Program is administered through the Ontario Hockey League office. Once a player graduates from the OHL, he will receive a minimum scholarship of tuition, textbooks and compulsory fees towards an undergraduate degree for each year played in the Ontario Hockey League. The OHL Scholarship can be applied to a traditional university or college four-year undergraduate degree / diploma as well as a Technical or Trade School, Firefighting or EMS.

Canadian Universities

Opportunities to attend Canadian universities on scholarship and or play hockey while studying are available through individual schools and through the CHL Scholarship program.

Canadian Interuniversity Sport
Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) is the national association governing university sports across Canada. Qualifications for academic entrance differ for each Canadian university.

Canadian Colleges Athletic Association
The Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA formerly CIAU) is the coordinating body for college sports in Canada. There are 5 regional athletic conferences for league play: ACAA (Atlantic), QSSF (Quebec), OCAA (Ontario), ACAA (Alberta), BCCAA (British Columbia).

US Colleges
Opportunities to attend US Colleges on scholarship and play hockey while studying are available through individual schools. The CHL Scholarship program may be applied towards a US College degree or diploma but NCAA regulations include significant barriers to playing US college hockey for anyone who has played meaningful games in the CHL (OHL, QMJHL and WHL).

National Collegiate Athletic Association
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the governing body for all colleges & universities offering athletic programs in the United States. The NCAA Eligibility Center provides tools and information to help student-athletes learn about the NCAA and its athletics.

College Hockey Inc
College Hockey, Inc. is a marketing and informational resource for Division I men's college hockey. College Hockey, Inc. works closely with the commissioners of the five Division I men's hockey conferences and the coaching staffs of the 59 Division I programs. They are a great source of information on eligibility rules for potential recruits.

College Board
CollegeBoard is a not-for-profit membership organization that helps students to find college success and opportunity. They work with middle schools, high schools and 3,800 colleges and universities in over 180 countries and territories, as well as policymakers on the national and state levels and are a great source of information for prospective college students.
