Wild card berth for Wild

The Minor Midget AAA Wild will play in the OHL Cup for the second year in a row.  Rick Legault’s squad learned earlier this week that they had earned a wild card berth in the prestigious year-end tournament after they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

The tournament provides scouts from OHL teams with a last chance to assess players for the OHL draft in May.

The Wild posted a 20-8-2 record in league play, good for third place in the OEMHL.

Overall the team was 36-17-5 and ranked among the top 20 Minor Midget teams in Ontario.   In November, the Minor Midget Wild served notice that they were a team to watch when they won the Bauer International AAA Invite Tournament in Chicago, defeating Dinama Riga from Latvia in the finals.

The 2010 OHL Cup features 20 of the top minor midget teams in Ontario and the USA. The champions and finalists from minor hockey associations in Ontario, including the ODMHA, OMHA, GTHL, and the Alliance receive invitations to the tournament. In addition, a team from Hockey Northwestern Ontario participates.

Organizers also invite several wild card teams based on their record throughout the year.

The Ottawa Valley Titans, winners of the 2009-10 OEMHL Minor Midget championship, and the Ottawa 67s, league finalists, will also play in the tournament.

Last year the Wild was undefeated in regulation time in the OHL Cup, winning two games and losing two in overtime.  Two members of the team were selected in the 2009 OHL draft.

The 2010 OHL Cup takes place March 17-21 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.
